The spring gala is planned for May 15, 16 and 17 at Smoky Mountain Meadows Campground. Campsite reservation information is on the Smoky Mountain Meadows Web site, www.smokymtnmeadows.com or sites can be reserved by phone, 828-488-3672. Make your reservations early; this promises to be a busy weekend.
For those of you who haven’t been to a gala before, this is what happens:
Most people will arrive Friday night, but some people will arrive early and paddle Friday. There should be about 70 people total. The closest rivers are the Nantahala, Tuckaseegee, Little Tennessee, Ocoee, and probably some other trips.
Saturday morning, we meet for coffee and sign up for a trip. Then pile in the cars and head to the river. After everyone gets unloaded at the put in, all the drivers take the cars down stream to the take out. Then all the drivers pack in to the largest car available and go back to the put in with as few vans/trucks as possible.
At the end of the day, we will gather around the camp fire and exaggerate the events of the day.
Sunday morning, we tend to paddle shorter river sections so that we can all get home early.
