About this event:
URGENT: LOCATION CHANGE – GCA Fall Membership Paddle & Officer Election, Sunday, October 18, 2020
PLEASE SIGN UP FOR THIS EVENT AGAIN EVEN IF YOU HAD ALREADY RSVP’D!
Due to the extremely high water levels on the Metro Hooch, the location of the GCA Fall Membership Paddle & Officer Election is being changed to the Upper Chattahoochee River.
We will meet at Wildwood Outfitters parking lot (link below) at noon for a short business meeting/election and then paddle together. We won’t be able to offer pizza unfortunately so bring your own snacks. We can either all paddle the Upper Hooch (Section III) from Highway 115 to Wildwood Outfitters, a Class II run. Or we can divide up and some can paddle from Wildwood to Mossy Creek (Section IV), Class I with a couple of Class II- rapids.
We will comply with social distancing recommendations: we will wear masks during the meeting and we will keep appropriate distance between people. For shuttles we will also wear masks, use trucks when possible for shuttling or leave windows open for ventilation.
Please note that we will be monitoring the COVID-19 situation in Georgia and will follow their guidelines and policies on group size (see below for GCA’s full Statement on COVID-19 and participant responsibility for risk).
In spite of our efforts to operate safely we cannot guarantee that there is no risk involved. We ask our members to be responsible. If you are running a fever, have other signs or symptoms of COVID-19, or suspect that you have been exposed to COVID-19, please do not attend this event.
We hope you will be able to join us!
Lisa Haskell, President GCA
Statement regarding COVID-19:
During these uncertain times, the GCA is working to balance the organization’s mission to provide training and group paddling opportunities with the risk posed by COVID-19. The coronavirus threat and the ultimate impact on society and the sporting community is still unknown at this time. The situation is fluid with new information being released almost hourly regarding the progression of the COVID-19 outbreak and the recommended guidance for group activities from Federal, state, and local authorities.
GCA is scheduling its normal events, including the Fall Gala, Membership Paddle, and Christmas Party, but may cancel or postpone upcoming events as needed in accordance with the latest official guidelines and local or state restrictions. Even if conditions permit GCA to proceed with an event as scheduled, there is no possible way to eliminate all risk associated with COVID-19 and other infectious diseases. COVID-19 is a special concern due to the potential for disease transmission by people infected by the virus who are not exhibiting any symptoms of the disease. No amount of screening can completely eliminate this risk.
Each member or participant must take personal responsibility to assess his/her risk based on medical history, age, or other relevant factors. Older adults and people who have severe underlying medical conditions like heart or lung disease or diabetes seem to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from COVID-19 illness. Individuals who fall into these categories are encouraged to avoid any GCA activities that will involve larger groups or to avoid GCA activities entirely until there is a vaccine or other effective protection against virus transmission.
GCA expects that all persons who attend any event will follow all applicable laws regarding social distancing, masks, and travel. Prior to attending any event, each person should review state and local guidance related to COVID-19 for the area in which the event is being held. Any person who has recently exhibited symptoms of COVID-19 or come in contact with anyone who tested positive for COVID-19 should not participate in any GCA event. Individuals who participate in any event will be expected to follow hygiene and social distancing guidelines, including regular hand washing and/or use of hand sanitizer, use of masks when on land (i.e. before and after paddling), allowing distance with other paddlers during put in and take out and while maneuvering on the river, and coordinating shuttles so as to minimize the number of individuals in a single vehicle. Participants should not share equipment. Finally, GCA asks that you avoid any river or activity that is above your existing skill level, so as to minimize the need for hands-on river rescues.
