About this event:
We are going to paddle from Thrift’s Ferry to Bull Sluice. All the rapids are class 2, except Bull Sluice which is a class 4, but can easily be portaged. This is a short run, usually it only takes 1 to 1.5 hours. But we are going to take it SLOW. Bring your swim mask or snorkel because we are going to stop at some calm stretches and swim around a good bit. I also plan on taking a leisurely lunch. So, this trip will probably take 2.5 to 3.5 hours. We will also swim a bit at the bottom of Bull Sluice with the locals, and I will show everybody the pothole hot tub right below single drop!
Just a reminder, this is a class 2 whitewater paddle. It is friendly for beginner whitewater paddlers. You must have a proper whitewater boat, pfd, and helmet to paddle this section. If you have a decked boat, you must have a neoprene type sprayskirt.
I hate to miss this, but need to spend another day with my folks in NC. I hope you will do this trip again because it sounds like great fun. Thank you for organizing it.
Unfortunately, I am not going to be able to make it. I was really looking forward to a new river – sounds FUN!. Hopefully next time!
Hey Guys, we are meeting at Bull Sluice at 11:30. There is a strong chance of rain and cloudy weather, so we may just be doing a more conventional paddle without much swimming, in that case! Please note, this trip has a short hike to and from the river!
I am disappointed in the number of trips available for beginning Kayakers.
Lee Ann Bellon
Well, I’m sorry you feel that way. In the last month, we’ve had multiple trips to the Tuckasegee, Hiwasee, and Metro Hooch, all beginner friendly. This month we have a Toccoa paddle, and the Chattooga clean up, which are beginner whitewater friendly. That seems pretty good to me. I would recommend you join our Facebook page, or join our Yahoo email group. Due to the convenience of social media, the majority of people plan informal trips a few days ahead of time. If you post on our FB what river you’d like to paddle, you won’t have any trouble finding people to paddle with.
I Would love to come to the June 5th event. I have a bad back. Will there be someone to help be portage my kayak as there is no way I can do it.
Lee Ann Bellon
Lee Ann, There is a 1/4 hike down hill at the put in, and 1/8 mile hike uphill at the take out, plus the portage at Bull Sluice, so this may not be the best river for you.
We will meet at the Bull Sluice parking lot at 11:30 AM. The parking lot is on the left immediately after crossing the hwy 76 bridge over the Chattooga. Bring your swimming goggles and a nice lunch!
What time
Jay, This GCA Chattooga weekend coincides with TVCC paddle school. I’d still LOVE to experience Chattooga with you and
my more experienced GCA paddle buds…… can you give me a heads up if you repeat this trip? Both the paddle and your swim and explore idea sound awesome to me!
Thanks! Deborah Webb
