The focus of this class is to improve your boat handling and river reading skills.
Many new paddlers only catch a couple eddies while “running” a river. This class will involve working on our techniques for eddy hopping and making ferries in fast water. River reading becomes an important part of paddling; learning to use the water to your advantage saves energy and is the difference between just “running” a river and making your way down in style.

The skills you need:

1. Paddle comfortably in Class II whitewater.
2. Have paddled class 2-3 water comfortably at least 6 times.
3. Be able to catch eddies, do peel outs and ferry in class 2 water successfully.
4. Combat roll not required, but participant is actively working on it and is comfortable hanging out for an Eskimo (“T”) rescue.

If you are comfortable on the Tuckaseegee and have paddled the Nantahala, but want to learn to make more difficult moves, catch smaller eddies and step up your whitewater game, this is the class for you. This class will be physically challenging.

Skills we will work on:

1. Catching smaller eddies and eddy hopping in class 2-3 water.
2. Difficult ferries.
3 .River running strategies.
4. Reading whitewater.

Gear/Equipment:

PARTICIPANTS MUST PROVIDE ALL OF THEIR OWN EQUIPMENT! No gear is included in the clinic fee.
Bring your usual paddling gear for paddling a Class II-III river. (Your kayak should have flotation in the stern). A river runner or creek boat is preferred, but not mandatory.
Participants must have at a minimum the following:

  • Whitewater kayak (with floatation bags in stern)
  • Helmet (with noseplug recommended)
  • Personal flotation device
  • Spray skirt
  • Paddle
  • Appropriate footwear (paddling booties, water shoes, etc.) is required.  Thin, lower-profile shoes are suggested.  Flip flops are not recommended because they will fall off during a swim.  Sandals such as Tevas, Chacos do not fit well in whitewater kayaks and have the potential to get hung inside the kayak during a flip.
  • Also suggested is synthetic clothing such as the following, depending upon how cold-natured you are:
    • Neoprene wetsuit (farmer John/Jane style with no sleeves)
    • Paddling splash jacket or drytop
    • Polyester fleece top
    • Bathing suit (for the ladies a two-piece design tends to be easier when answering the call of nature in the woods…)
    • Polypro underwear/long johns
    • NO COTTON GARMENTS are permitted

We also recommend the following:

  • Plenty of bottled water
  • Lunch you can pack in your boat
  • Sunblock
  • Waterproof camera if desired

Swimming Ability:

You must be able to swim and should not panic with your head under water.

Physical Condition:

Whitewater paddling is a physically and mentally challenging activity that requires fitness, flexibility, and a positive attitude in stressful situations. Kayaking is a high-risk activity for individuals with a history of shoulder dislocations. Applicants should discuss potential physical limitations with the Coordinator before signing up.
